THE SANDWICH

6 hr         Maritime VHF Operator Certificate
15hr        Day Skipper
30hr       BoatMaster  (Prerequisite: Day Skipper)

This is the minimum to do to start. Once we get comfortable with our current boat then get some inboard engine maintenance experience.

To get to Blue Water Cruising this is what we need to do…
but lately I have been thinking that this is way way in the distance and even thinking this far ahead is making me dizzy so I’m not going to think about it. Let’s just do first things first. Enjoy. And then revisit this Blue Water idea at a later date…[updated 22 August 2013]
Looking for Boat #2 and Blue Water Cruising is a long way off. It might never happen. I’m okay with that. For now I/we want to do Coastal Cruising and enjoy that first. You can’t run before you walk so we will take things slowly and enjoy the ride and the view. [updated 26 January 2014]

THE APPLE

8hr          Maritime Restricted Operator Certificate (MROC)  (2hr if already have Maritime VHF Operator Certificate)
55hr        NZ Coastal Skipper  (Prerequisite: Day Skipper, Maritime VHF Operator Certificate, 200 hrs proven sea-time*)
6hr          NZ Radar Certificate (Prerequisite: BoatMaster)
16hr        Coastal Medic Certificate
16hr        Advanced Sea Survival (2 day course)
15hr        Inboard Engine Maintenance

THE SNACKS

75hr        Ocean Yachtmaster  (Prerequisite:  Current First Aid, MROC & NZ Coastal Skipper Certificates, 400 hours proven sea-time, with 50 hours beyond harbour limits and at least 72 hours continuous time at least 30 miles off-shore)

*Proven sea-time
